Can we do a face-to-face consultation?
Unless they’re a guest artist who is on a tight schedule or doesn’t have the possibility to do an online consult, they should be able to meet with you for a few of minutes to talk about your custom project.
Can I bring a friend or companion?
Most shops currently don’t allow companions but you shouldn’t feel afraid to ask. You’ll be sitting for a while and submitting yourself to a process that isn’t very comfortable. If theres a possibility to make that easier and it is within our power to provide that, we should.
Could you help me fill out the consent form?
It takes a few seconds to do so, come on.
Can we make a change to the design?
This design will be on your body FOREVER and the most important thing should be that you (the person wearing it) is happy with it. If an artist ever makes you fell like its they’re way or the highway, my advise would be to turn around and leave even if you loose your deposit.
Could you explain the tattoo process?
This only takes a few minutes and it is absolutely understandable that you as a client would want to know what we will be doing to your body. This is a complex process that is unknown to most and being on the know definitely helps calm the nerves.
Could we move the stencil?
I cannot repeat this enough : we can move the stencil AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT. This will be on your body FOREVER and you should be absolutely sure, comfortable and happy with the placement of your tattoo.
I don’t feel like talking, is that okay?
This is 100% okay. We all deal with pain differently and if silence is what you need, we should be more than happy to provide that. However, this doesn’t mean the artist can just “checkout”, put headphones on and just go to work ignoring you. We should always be available for you during the process so you can feel comfortable addressing us if you need to and/or we can check in with you regularly to make sure you’re feeling okay.
Can I read/wear my headphones during the session?
Same answer as the one for the previous questions. I do have to add a small thing though. If this is your preferred thing to go while getting tattooed, please understand that me interrupting to check in is a necessity and for your own good.
What ink/supplies do you use?
This is a 100% valid question and your artist should be able to answer it easily. We know our own supplies better than anyone.
Can we take a break? (water, bathroom, stretching, snack, etc)
PLEASE let us know whenever this occurs. I have had clients not communicate their needs for a break before saying that they had a negative tattoo experience where an artist made them fell bad for taking breaks. That is a HUGE RED FLAG. You are sitting/laying down in an uncomfortable chair, getting poked by a needle repeatedly and getting your body branded for ever, PLEASE take as many breaks as you need.
Could we stop and schedule another session to finish?
YES! It doesn’t do us any good to overwhelm your system and for you to suffer to end up with a bad experience. Unless the artist isn’t local and/or wont come back to the ares, this should be ok. You’ll have to put up with having an unfinished piece for a while but if thats okay with you, that should be ok with us.
